History


The 1st CSDP OLYMPIAD was organised in the context of Cyprus contribution to the European Initiative for the Exchange of Young Officers Inspired by Erasmus Program. The main goal of the CSDP OLYMPIAD was to acquaint the cadets with the basic knowledge on CSDP providing them with the incentive to study accordingly, in order to write a paper on CSDP, and to compete with cadets of other Member States in a CSDP knowledge Competition.

The 1st CSDP Olympiad was held in Cyprus from 3rd to 5th October 2012. It was attended by 11 countries. Following the 1st Olympiad's success, it was decided to hold the competition every two years.

The awarded students, per category, are as follows:
 
a)  The Single Competition Winner and 1st CSDP Olympiad Winner – Thomas Van Hoecke (The Belgian Military Academy),
b)  Best Paper Winner – Andrea Patrignani (Scuola di Applicazione e Istituto Studi Militari dell Esercito, Italy),
c)  Best Cover Winner – Stefan Haubner & Martin Engleitner (The Theresan Military Academy, Austria).

 

The 2nd CSDP OLYMPIAD was attended by 35 Military Academy students from 13 countries, who during the first cycle of the competition submitted papers on selected topics related to Common Security and Defence Policy. During the final phase, hosted in Athens (Greece) at the Military Academy premises, 29 students qualified from 11 countries (Greece, Cyprus, Austria, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Belgium, Spain, France and Germany). The CSDP Olympiad was organised by Hellenic National Defence General Staff and lasted from 7th to 9th May 2014.

The awarded students, per category, were as follows:
 
a)  The Single Competition Winner and 2nd Olympiad winner - Paolo Faneli (Italy),
b)  Best Paper Winner - Gonzalo Vallespin Terry (Spain),
c)  Best Cover Winner - Manuel Kurbantfinski (Austria).

 

The 3rd CSDP OLYMPIAD was attended by 48 Military Academy students from 15 EU Member states , who during the first cycle of the competition submitted papers on selected topics related to Common Security and Defence Policy. During the final phase, hosted in Liptovský Mikuláš (Slovakia) at the  Armed Forces Academy of General M.R.Štefánik, 41 students qualified from 15 countries (Austria, Cyprus, Greece , Estonia  Italy, Ireland, Hungury, Poland, the Czech Republic,  Romania, the Slovak Republic, Belgium, Spain, France and Germany).

The CSDP Olympiad was organised by Hellenic National Defence General Staff and lasted from 4th to 7th October  2016.

The awarded students, per category, were as follows:

a)  The Single Competition Winner and 3rd Olympiad winner - JOAQÍN ALFARO PÉREZ, Spain 
b)  Best Paper Winner: John Michael NEVIN,  Ireland
c)  Best Cover Winner: Sebastian Enache IONUT,  Romania
 
 

The 4th CSDP OLYMOIAD was attended by 49 Military Academy Cadets/Students from 14 EU Member states, who during the first cycle of the competition submitted papers on selected topics related to Common Security and Defence Policy. During the final phase, hosted in Veliko Tarnovo (Bulgaria) at the Vasil Levski National Military University 34 Cadets/Students qualified from 13 countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain).

The CSDP Olympiad lasted from 21st - 25th May 2018.

The awarded students, per category, were as follows:

a)  The Single Competition Winner and 4th Olympiad Winner: Kacper KASPRZAK – Poland – Military Technical University
b)  Best Paper Winner (presentation included): Matthias KERN – Austria – Theresan Military Academy
c)  Best Cover Winner: Nikola SAVIC – Austria – Theresan Military Academy
 
 

 

The 5th CSDP OLYMPIAD was organised by the Croatian Defence Academy (CDA). The residential phase was originally planned to take place in Dubrovnik (Croatia) in June 2020, but because of the SARS-CoV-2 situation it was postponed several times.

Finally, the Implementation Group decided in February 2021 - in compliance with the organisers - that no resedential phase will take place and that the results of the pre-phase (essay writing and cover page competition) will count as the final results of the 5th CSDP Olympiad. That is why the 5th CSDP Olympiad has 2 winners only.

The winners of the 5th CSDP Olympiad are::

a)  Best Paper Winner: Nikolaus PACHUCKI-BAMMER  – Austria – Theresan Military Academy
b)  Best Cover Winner: Alexander KERN – Austria – Theresan Military Academy
 
 
 
 

The 6th CSDP OLYMOIAD was attended by 39 Cadets, Midshipmen and Students from 14 EU Member states, who during the first cycle of the competition submitted papers on selected topics related to Common Security and Defence Policy. For the final phase - hosted in Salon de Provence (France) at the French Air and Space Force Academy - 31 Cadets, Midshipmen and Students qualified from 14 countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain).

The CSDP Olympiad lasted from 30th May - 3rd June 2022.

b)  Paper Winner (presentation included): MURUMETS Iida Elise – Estonia – Estonian Military Academy
c)  Cover Page Winner: KOURMOUSIS Georgios – Greece – Hellenic Air Force Academy
d) Special prize beause of being among the top 3 of each competition: PUSHKAROVA Antonia – Bulgaria – Bulgarian Naval Academy
